Shanthi House – athletic champions of Vasavilan Central
Ananda Pathiraja North Central Province
Hundreds of girls and boys of Vasavilan Central College, Jaffna, on
Saturday participated in their annual sports meet held on a grand scale
at the college ground with participation of teachers, parents and
invitees.
The event started in the morning saw a great enthusiasm in students
and teachers in organizing the meet and participating in it. It was the
first time that Vasavilan College had a sports meet in the same
premises. Students divided into four Houses, Keerthi, Shanthi, Shakthi
and Jothi took part in a number of track and field events displaying
their skills before their teachers, parents and invited guests.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Brigadier BCJAF Rodrigo,
Brigadier General Staff of Security Forces Headquarters Jaffna as Chief
Guest. Shanthi House won the first place with a tally of 380 while
Shakthi and Keerthi secured the second and third places respectively.
Commander 515 Brigade Brigadier Buvaneka Randeniya gave away the trophy
to the winning House.
Classes of this prestigious college were being conducted at Urumpirai
since 1990, since LTTE terrorists captured the college and made it one
of their strongholds which were used to launch attacks on Security
Forces. After Sri Lanka Army liberated the area, Vasavilan College
remained within the Palaly High Security Zone.
However, with initiative of Commander Security Forces – Jaffna Major
General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, de-mining in and around the premises was
expedited and later it was handed over to the Jaffna Education
Department on September 28,2011.
Vasavilan Central College is presently functioning as a Navodya
School. |
