82nd Battle of the Maroons:

Charitha steals the limelight

Some excellent batting displays were the highlights of the second day’s play of the 82nd edition of the Battle of the Maroons between Ananda College and Nalanda College which ended in a draw at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground yesterday.

Nalandian Charitha Kumarasinghe who was the top scorer of this year’s battle was adjudged Man of the Match while Ananda’s Sachithra Perera won the award for the Best Bowler for his figures of (4 for 9 and 2 for 58). Nalanda’s Ruwinda Shamen was picked as the Best Batsman for his well played knock of 50 in the first innings.

An unusual incident took place during this year’s Battle of the Maroons, when match referee B C Cooray offered five runs to the Nalanda’s first innings’ total as a penalty for Ananda batsmen damaging the pitch.

Ananda batsmen resumed their innings at 102 for 5 wickets yesterday.

The Nalandians to shine on the last day were Charitha Kumarasinghe (86) and the Vice Captain Sineth Gunawardhana who was unbeaten at 63 when the total stood at 212 for 5 at close of play. Charitha’s innings included 17 well hit boundaries before his innings came to an end when spinner Sachithra Perera struck. At that time, the Nalanda total was 148.

Anandians were making inroads with Geshan Wimaladharma’s two quick wickets in the 66th over when Nalandaians were at 169/5. Except for Sachithra and Geshan Ananda bowlers were unable to perform well on the final day.
