No polling centres for Puttalam IDPs

Puttalam District Returning Officer Kingsley Fernando said that no action would be taken to set up polling centres for displaced persons in refugee camps in the Puttalam district who have come there from the Northern and Eastern Provinces. He said a large number of people had come to Puttalam from areas such as Mannar, Mullaitivu and Jaffna.

In every election, polling centres were set up for them in close proximity to their refugee camps and this way about 20,000 displaced persons were given the opportunity to cast their votes. Fernando added that as the war was over many of the displaced persons in refugees camps had gone back to their areas and thereafter there was no need for setting up new polling centres.
