Fake gold costs dear

A suspect resident in Rajawella was taken into custody by Gampola Police Tuesday for hoodwinking a bank by mortgaging two alloy mixed bangles as genuine gold items for Rs 135,000. This follows a complaint made by the authorities at the Bank branch in Gampola. The suspect was due to be produced in Court yesterday. Investigations are continuing.

One succumbs to cut injuries

A person admitted to the Karapitiya hospital with cut injuries succumbed to his injuries Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Gayan Madhusanka Seneviratne (32) of Eththiligoda, Jambuketiya. Galle Police investigating into the death said the victim had been attacked with a manna knife by a person who came in a van while he was standing at the Milidduwa junction. Investigations are continuing.

Man knocked down by train

A pedestrian knocked by the Colombo-Vavuniya intercity train near the Mirigama railway station died on admission to the Mirigama hospital Tuesday. The deceased was identified as H P Premadasa (70) of Walawwatta, Mirigama. The inquest was due to be held yesterday. Mirigama Police are investigating.

Arrested with T56

The Mirigama Special Crime Operations Unit arrested a suspect possessing a T56 weapon at the Kaduwela town Tuesday afternoon. He is being interrogated under detention orders.

Mound of earth falls on two

Two persons died after being crushed under a mound of earth which fell on them while they were cutting a ditch at Sugathipura, Madiwela to erect a wall to prevent soil erosion Tuesday. The deceased were identified as S A D Sunil Premaratne (52) and Upali Gunatilleke (47). The bodies are kept at the Jayawardenapura hospital awaiting an autopsy. Mirihana Police are investigating.

Fourteen hopitalized

Fourteen persons were injured and admitted to the Valachchenai hospital when a private bus from Kandy to Kaththankudy ran off the road near the 120 km post on the Batticaloa-Polonnaruwa road and crashed on to an electric post around 9.30 am Tuesday. Fourteen others who received minor injuries were discharged after OPD treatment. The alleged bus driver is in police custody. Valachchenai Police are investigating.
