Oscar glory |
The formal ceremony at which the awards are presented is one of the
most prominent award ceremonies in the world and is televised live in
more than 200 countries annually and is watched by billions of people.
This ceremony is where all the stars show their styles and glitz and
glamour takes center stage on the red carpet. This is the oldest award
ceremony in the media and it was an idea conceived by the legendary
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio boss Louise B. Mayer.
The first awards were presented on May 16, 1929, at a private brunch
at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel with an audience of about 270 people.
Fifteen statuettes were awarded, honoring artists, directors and other
personalities of the filmmaking industry of the time for their works
during the 1927–1928 period.
The first Best Actor awarded was Emil Jannings, for his performances
in The Last Command and The Way of All Flesh. At the 29th ceremony, held
in 1957, the Best Foreign Language Film category was introduced.
Although there are seven other types of awards presented by the
Academy the best known one is the Academy Award of Merit more popularly
known as the Oscar statuette. Made of gold-plated britannium on a black
metal base, the statue is of a Knight holding a crusader’s sword
standing on a reel of film with five spokes. The five spokes each
represent the original branches of the Academy: Actors, Writers,
Directors, Producers, and Technicians.
The 83rd Academy Awards honored the best films of 2010. The ceremony
took place on February 27, 2011, at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood,
California. During the ceremony, The Academy presented Oscars in 24
categories. For the first time in history, this year’s ceremony was
hosted by its youngest hosts- actress Anne Hathaway, who is famous from
the movies like Princess Diaries, and James Franco, famous from films
like Pineapple Express and who, himself was a nominee this year for the
Best actor category for his role in the film 127 Hours. This year the
biggest winner was a movie called The King’s Speech, based on a true
character, King George VI, father of Queen Elizabeth II current reigning
monarch of England.
He was plagued since childhood by a paralyzing stammer, and the
future king has given up hope of finding a cure for his impediment. His
concerned wife urges him to seek the help of an iconoclastic Australian
speech therapist, Lionel Logue, who insists on a level of familiarity
with his new patient that the royal prince is loath to permit. The
King’s Speech received the most nominations with twelve.
The King’s Speech won four awards, all in major categories: Best
Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Original Screenplay.
British actor Colin Firth who is most famous for his role in Bridget
John’s Diary, as the stiff lawyer Darcy, did an amazing portrayal of
King George VI and took home the Oscar.
