Enjoying Sting at Sydney Opera House

On the last day of January (31), this year, I had the privilege of being present at the world famous Sydney Opera House when the British music idol of the 1980s , Sting of the former Police Band fame, made his presence felt with his magnificent performance accompanied by the noted Sydney Symphonic Orchestra striking up memorable music that was a fad three decades ago, and still enlivening present day audiences.

He is winner of many Grammy Awards. The acoustics in the state of the art Drama Theatre was simply right for the reverberating as well as the cool soothing symphonic orchestration that accompanied the singer’s rendering.

Sting

My son Raam Siva, despite his business schedule, took me to be in the centre of the audience in “ L Row, “, in Level I, just a few yards away from the stupendous Opera Theatre which housed in full capacity nearly 2000 admirers both old and young dressed in elegant attire and showing their refined taste in appreciating fine music with even standing ovation for most of the songs the singer sang with his controlled vocal tones.

Most of the songs he sung were his own composition as jazz, classical and even lovely Spanish and Portuguese rhythms that were irresistible for a dancer or a member of the audience either to gently shake hiss or head this side or that side or to tap his or her feet to the intoxicating rhythms.

Sting was also a notable lyricist or how he may be called a songwriter. The performance was an amalgam of melodies, lingering on peaceful themes but with vibrant music. It enthralled the audience that kept on shaking ones head. And the lyrics had deeper meanings.

In his presentation, he added humour, acting, laughing, mimicking and entertaining the attentive audience that was thrilled to see him perform in a live concert. To me he looked somewhat like our own writer in English, Carl Muller, as he moved on the stage with his short steps and then radically changing his stance as a jumper and dancer. Born on the same date as Mahatma Gandhi on October 02, 1951, with his real name Gordon Mathew Thomas, Sting proved he is a polished performer on stage with meticulous fineness.

Readers would be aware that he has acted in many films too. Sting is also known as a philanthropist and an activist in caring for the socially handicapped people. To know about his songs and albums and other details of this 60 year lord of music (he is credited with the honour of a CBE), one could always collect material from the Internet,

Although I am not a particular fan of Sting as I would like the greats of the 50s, 60s ,and 70s, yet I enjoyed the variety of musical fare he provided ably and appropriately backed by the Sydney Symphonic Orchestra making me like the music of the 1980s as well.

Sting’s Music was wine and pleasure for a retiring soul like me.
