As outrageous as it may sound, the Golden Raspberry Awards recognizes
and highlights the year’s worst screening performances in the Hollywood
cinema industry. The ceremony was founded by American copywriter and
publicist John J B Wilson in 1981. The awards come in the form of
cluster of golf sized raspberries which stand on the top of a film reel.
This year’s ceremony will happen on February 26, just a day prior to the
grand Oscars. The fame or the popularity of many stars won’t save them
from sarcastically nominated at this year’s Raspberry Awards. Miley
Cyrus, Jennifer Anniston, Gerald Butler, Robert Pattison, Jack Black,
Jessica Alba, Taylor Lautner and Sarah Jessica Parker are some
high-profile stars who will feature in this year’s nominations.
Taylor Lautner, the shirtless werewolf guy in ‘Eclipse’, may have won
many hearts of dizzy teenage girls with his exceptionally well manicured
physique, but his performance in Eclipse sure did not impress any
critics. He alongside his vampire mate Robert Pattinson is shortlisted
for the worst actor award in this year’s Raspberry’s. Jack Black again
proved that he is running out of tricks with his role in the ‘Gulliver’s
Travels’. His creepy slapstick humor was not quite good enough to keep
him off the racks. Miley Cyrus and Jessica Alba, shortlisted for the
worst actress award proved that charms and good looks alone are not
enough to make it big in the Hollywood cinema.

Many and ‘Nickelodeon’ announced that they will release the movie
adaptation of the popular children’s cartoon Avatar the Last Airbender.
Same can be said for Nicholas Spark’s much loved novel The Last Song and
Stephynie Meyer’s Eclipse. But two weeks away from Oscars, both ‘The
Last Airbender’ and ‘Eclipse’ are nominated for the worst picture of the
year award in Raspberry’s. ‘The Last Song’ just avoided being
shortlisted for the worst movie category even were brimming with high
expectations after all the negative reviews and ratings that it did get.
Even some of the highly esteemed movie directors have been
shortlisted for this year’s awards. Among them are the great M Night
Shyamyalan and Silvestre Stallon.
Shyamalan, the acclaimed director of Sixth Sense is shortlisted for
his dismal cinema adaptation, The Last Airbender. May be while
daydreaming, Shyamalan might have fantasized of an Oscar, but not a
‘Raspberry Award for sure. Probably he shouldn’t have got involved with
‘The Last Airbender at the first place.
Shyamalan is perhaps not the ideal person to turn a cartoon in to a
movie. However, if the projections are right, the chances are that
Shyamalan will have to face the embarrassment of being ridiculed for
making the worst movie of the year. Yet if given the award, he will take
some heart from the fact that in 2010 even the great Michael Bay had to
walk away with a Raspberry award for his block buster hit ‘Transformers
Revenge of the Fallen’.
