Car kills pedestrian

A pedestrian knocked down by a car opposite premises number 607 on Galle Road, Mt Lavinia succumbed to his injuries at the Kalubowila hospital on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Nallahandige Hemantha (36) of Ratmalana. The alleged car driver was taken into police custody. Mt Lavinia Police is investigating.

Lorry seized

Jaffna Police seized a lorry transporting a stock of 120 gelignite sticks, 90 non-electric detonators and three detonator cords near Railway station junction on Jaffna Hospital road and arrested its driver on Thursday night. The suspect driver a resident in Rathmalyaya, Puttalam was due to be produced before the Jaffna Magistrate yesterday. Investigations are continuing.

Motorcyclist killed

A motorcyclist injured in a car-motorcycle collision at Nittambuwa on the Nittambuwa-Veyangoda road, succumbed to his injuries at the Wathupitiwala hospital on Thursday. The deceased was identified as K Nilantha Kumara (33) of Kongahawatta. The alleged car driver arrested by the Nittambuwa Police was due to be produced before the Attanagalle Magistrate yesterday.

Lorry carrying ganja seized

Thanamalwila Police which checked a lorry at a random road block on the Thanamalwila Uda Walawa road on Thursday detected 64.915 kg of ganja hidden inside the lorry and arrested a suspect in this connection.
