Independence Day in Adelaide
The 63rd independence day of Sri Lanka was celebrated in Adelaide,
South Australia on the evening of February 04, 2011 at the Campbelltown
Function Centre amidst a gathering of over 200 Sri Lankans belonging to
all four communities.
The Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Aboriginal and
Reconciliation, Youth and for Volunteers of the South Australian State
Government, Grace Portoleasi MP attended the function as the chief
guest. Deputy Mayor of Campbelltown Jill Whittaker was the Guest of
Honour. At the commencement of the official ceremonies, the traditional
oil lamp was lit by the Chief Guest, the guest of honour, the Honorary
Consul for Sri Lanka in South Australia, Ananda Eriyagama and four Sri
Lankans representing the Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim and Burgher
communities.
The guests were entertained with food and drinks and this was the
first time, after a lapse of many years, that the Sri Lankan
independence day was celebrated in South Australia on this scale. |
