Independence Day in Adelaide

The 63rd independence day of Sri Lanka was celebrated in Adelaide, South Australia on the evening of February 04, 2011 at the Campbelltown Function Centre amidst a gathering of over 200 Sri Lankans belonging to all four communities.

The Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Aboriginal and Reconciliation, Youth and for Volunteers of the South Australian State Government, Grace Portoleasi MP attended the function as the chief guest. Deputy Mayor of Campbelltown Jill Whittaker was the Guest of Honour. At the commencement of the official ceremonies, the traditional oil lamp was lit by the Chief Guest, the guest of honour, the Honorary Consul for Sri Lanka in South Australia, Ananda Eriyagama and four Sri Lankans representing the Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim and Burgher communities.

The guests were entertained with food and drinks and this was the first time, after a lapse of many years, that the Sri Lankan independence day was celebrated in South Australia on this scale.
