Match called off
Kandy Sports Corr
The Schools under 19 cricket tournament match between St. Sylvester's
College and Mahinda College, Galle, which was scheduled to be played at
police grounds, Kandy yesterday and today had to be called of due to
unavailability of a suitable matting. When the two teams and the two
umpires arrived in the ground they found that the matting was damaged
just in front of the popping crease and could pose problems for the
batsmen. In any case they could not have batted on that matting.
Next the Sylvestrian's in order to get on with the match brought a
matting from another school but on a suspicion they measured it after
laying it and found to be 9 inches short on either end and since the
required 22 yards was not there, the match had to be called off. The
Mahindians returned to Galle the same morning.
