SLSEF 2011 today
The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL), in collaboration with
the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Education Ministry and the
multinational computer giant Intel, will hold their annual Sri Lanka
Science and Engineering Fair (SLSEF), at the IESL’s Wimalasurendra
Auditorium, on February 18, 9.00 am onwards. The Science Review
Committee Chairman and the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine Director
Prof Rizvi Sheriff, will attend the occasion.
At this two-pronged competition, 20 novice inventors will be in the
limelight to exhibit their findings and projects. Ten of them have been
identified and selected from the prestigious ‘Junior Inventor of the
Year’ (JIY) competition 2010, conducted by the IESL. The other ten
contestants have been chosen by the NSF from its activities such as the
Science Research Project Competition (SRPC, conducted to popularize
science and inculcate scientific thinking, among the school going
fraternity.
Three of the best exhibitors picked from this SLSEF competition, will
represent Sri Lanka at the Intel International Science and Engineering
Fair (ISEF) to be held in USA, later this year. These three winners and
one Adult-in-charge, from the NSF/IESL, will be sponsored to the Intel
ISEF, in the US. Intel ISEF is the world’s largest, annually-held
pre-collegiate celebration of science. It brings together more than 1200
students from over 40 nations, to compete for over 900 prizes. Prizes
worth over US $ four million, will be distributed among the winners, in
scholarships, tuition grants, internships, scientific field trips and
other prizes.
National Awards, Merit Awards and International certificates will be
awarded to the students, based on the evaluation of their projects.
International certificates will be awarded for projects conducted under
specific fields. These certificates will be awarded only to the students
who will not be eligible to participate at the international fair. |
