Off Road Championship in Kandy

A full day's spills and thrills is in store for motor racing fans in
the hill capital when the inaugural meet of the Kandy off road and
Adventure club conducts its first 4x4 championship at the newly
constructed off road racing track at the Mahaweli Riverside in
Pallekelle this Saturday (February 12) commencing at 9 am.
A full days events for four classes of four wheel drive vehicles has
been lined up for the day. Over 40 vehicles have entered the fray and
among them are ladies too.
The prime mover of this racing meet Rohan Dammapala said that the
track is one metre in length is full of obstructions including boulders,
mind cavities and a flowing stream. The competition will have a tough
time in coming to terms with.
He said that this is a dual track which has been made challenging and
adventurous by the recent rains. In the event a vehicle gets stuck there
will be the recovery team to give assistance. There will be also 3 ATV's
(All Terrain Vehicles) following the competitors with communication
equipment to have an eye on the competitors and to meet any contingency.
The main attraction will be the ladies event on standard four wheel
drive cars. A number of ladies from Kandy, Colombo, Negombo and
Kurunegala will be seen in action.
Besides, there will be cars, trucks, jeeps and double cabs in action
considering the length and nature of the track it may take a competitor
an hour to complete the race. |
