Financial assistance
A total of 208 migrant worker children from the Southern
Province who excelled during the recent Advanced Level,
Ordinary Level and year 5 scholarship exams received
financial assistance amounting to a total of Rs four million
to further their education. Scholarships amounting to Rs
30,000 were provided for A-L students while Rs 20,000 and Rs
15,000 were granted to O-L and year 05 children under the
Scholarship Scheme initiated by the Sri Lanka Bureau of
Foreign Employment. Here Foreign Employment Minister Dilan

NCP roads ravaged

Nearly 1,600 kilometres of the NCP total road network of 2000 km has
been damaged by floods said Provincial Road Development Authority
General Manager Senarath Pushpakumara. Arrangements have been made to
repair the damaged roads with the assistance of the Provincial Council,
Security Forces and Community organizations in the area.
Independence marked in Adelaide
The 63rd independence day of Sri Lanka was celebrated in Adelaide,
South Australia on February 4 at the Campbelltown Function Centre.
Sri Lankans belonging to all communities participated.
South Australian Government Minister Grace Portoleasi was the Chief
Guest.
Campbelltown Deputy Mayor Jill Whittaker was the Guest of honour.
Flood affected assisted
The St John Ambulance with the financial assistance from the
Johanniter in Germany distributed 25 tons of bottled water, five tons
milk powder and five tons biscuits among flood victims. The items were
distributed at Kathankudi in Batticaloa and Samanthurai in Ampara on
January 29 and 30.
Lanka gaining world attention

Sri Lanka has been gaining serious world attention as it aspires to a
service economy. Montgomery Worldwide UK Project Director John Vimpany
said at a press conference on Hotel, Hospitality and Food Sri Lanka 2011
International Expo to boost industry growth.
Montgomery Worldwide has been following the rapid developments in Sri
Lanka in recent years and there is evidence of solid growth and strong
potential, he said. Speaking about their upcoming international trade
exhibition along with Pico Sri Lanka which will be held from October
27-29 at Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre, he said.
Flood damage in Batticaloa

According to the reports submitted by Batticaloa local Heads of
Departments, floods have caused a loss of Rs 1286.512 million to Govt.
Departments in early part of January 2011.
It also caused damage amounting to Rs 687.07 million to the bridges,
causeways, culverts and roads under the purview of RDA, RDD, and Local
Government.
Bo sapling taken to Jaffna
A sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi Bo tree at Anuradhapura was brought
from Anuradhapura to Jaffna by plane.
Brigadier Franklin Rodrigo received the sapling at Palaly. From
Palaly it was taken in procession in a decorated vehicle to Jaffna.
Prophet's birthday celebrations
A public meeting and prize distribution organized to mark Prophet
Muhammed's birthday celebrations by the Galle Muslim Cultural
Organization will he held on February 16 at 4 pm at Southlands Balika
Vidyalaya Hall, Fort, Galle.
Justice Minister Rauf Hakeem will be the chief guest, while Ruzly
Hussain will be the guest of honour and Hafiz Ehsan Iqbal Qadiri guest
speaker.
Lecture
The Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo is organizing a lecture on
Buddhist and Hindu Monuments.
The lecture will be delivered by Professor of Archaeology, University
of Kelaniya Anura Manathunga on February 14 at 6 pm at the ICC premises

Program on Tagore
The Tagore Society of Sri Lanka will present a program on musical
creativity of Rabindranath Tagore by The Amar - Daya Music Foundation
led by Dr Dayaratna Ranatunga and Prof Amara Ranatunga. The performance

A practical workshop on Yoga Meditation organized by the Maharagama

LL B Selection Test
The selection test for the LLB Program of the Open University of Sri
Lanka will be held on February 13. The time and venue indicated in the
original admission card are valid for the test.
Anula OGA AGM
The Annual General Meeting of Anula Vidyalaya, Nugegoda Old Girl's
Association will be held at the school hall on February 13 at 9 am.

Award ceremony
The award ceremony for Emerging youth leaders organized by the
National Institute for Business Management (NIBM) will be held today at
3.00 pm at the Institute Auditorium. It will be held under the patronage
of Youth Affairs and Skills Development Minister Dullas Alahapperuma.
The ceremony's objective is to identify and introduce to the society
youth between 17-25 who have real leadership qualities.
Selected youth will receive prizes and certificates.
Deputy Minister Duminda Dissanayake, NIBM Chairman Professor Lakshman
Jayatilake and Director General Dr EA Weerasinghe will participate.
Islamic lecture
A lecture on 'The war of the Prophet' organized by the Ihthihaad
Ahlissunnathi Wal Jamaa-Athi will be delivered in English by Al Haj
Moulavi MM Ahmedshah, on February 13 at 10 am at the Ladies Zavia,
Kotelawala Avenue (Upatissa Road), Bambalapitya, Colombo 04.
Germany doubles flood relief
Germany will double its flood relief to Sri Lanka which now adds up
to Rs 75 million (500,000 Euro) in the face of renewed floods. "The
latest news from the flood-affected areas are devastating We feel for
all those affected by the incidence of the second flood," German
Ambassador Jens Ploetner said.
He said the Federal Government has decided to double its help for the
flood-affected.
CMC to renovate old dispensaries

The Colombo Municipal Council has commenced a project to refurbish
all old dispensaries in the Colombo Municipal Council area.
The foundation stone was laid to build a dispensary at Maligawatta
West under the patronage of Colombo Municipal Council Special
Commissioner Omar Kameel yesterday. The cost of the project is Rs 12
million. Omar Kameel said the project will be completed within nine
months. This project will be helpful to ensure health facilities to the
Urban Community.
Cultivation drive
Ishara MUDUGAMUWA
The Agriculture Ministry will cultivate vegetables in selected
districts such as Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya to find immediate
solutions for the problems of lack of vegetables and high cost of them,
said an Agriculture Ministry Official.
Agriculture Department, Agrarian Development Department and
Provincial Agriculture Departments and other institutions come under the
Agriculture Ministry provide their assistance for the program, he said.
Small scale farmers will be connected to the program. The Ministry will
make people aware and encourage them to cultivate more vegetables in
their home gardens by providing seeds and planting materials at a
subsidized price, he said.
Nalandasara 2011
Nalanda College has organized its 12th radio station Nalandasara 2011
for five days - February 15-19 centering the Nalanda College premises.
The whole Western Province will be covered through FM 96.1 Mhz, and
on the opening ceremony certificates will be awarded to the All Island
Inter-School Sinhala and English Announcing Competition winners. They
will also launch a web page of school news.
Meeting
The Badulla district co-ordinating committee meeting will be held at
the Badulla Kachcheriya on February 14 at 9.30 am.
Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva will be at the chair.
Death of ANCL staffer’s brother
Priyantha Wijekoon of Wewa Para, Boralesgamuwa passed away.
He worked in the Sri Lanka Railways and was an active member of the
Trade Union Bureau of the Sri Lanka Communist Party and Samastha Lanka
Dumriya Engineru Sangamaya.
He is the elder brother of Lake House Journalist Chandana Wijekoon.
The body is at residence, No. 68/3, Wewa Para, Boralesgamuwa. Burial
will take place at Maharagama, Godigamuwa cemetery on Saturday, February
12 at 6 pm.
Actor Winnie Weththasinghe dies
Popular Tele drama actor Winnie Weththasinghe, 51, passed away at the
Horana Hospital yesterday. Weththasinghe was renowned as a popular film
star while having also made a name for himself as a talented stage drama
actor. He was a teacher by profession.
He entered theatre and drama acting from Sarath Kulanga’s Midi Wela.
He had played characters in Raja Kapuru and Abuddassa Kolama as well.
He acted in several tele dramas such as ‘Du Daruwo’, ‘Nedayo’
produced by Nalan Mendis and Bogala Sawndiris by Dayarathne Ratagedara.
He also acted in the film Seilama produced by H D Premarathna.
His funeral takes place on February 12 at the Bandaragama, Mildeniya
cemetery.
Principal retires
Venerable Thalpathikande Sri Dammaloka Thera, the principal of WP/KT
Siri Dewamitta Vidyalaya in Payagala South has retired after thirty
years of service in the sphere of education recently.
He was a past pupil of the Vidyalankara University, Kelaniya and
possessed a Honours degree of MA.
He received on his first appointment at Bibilegama Maha Vidyalaya in
Ratnapura. He has served R/Kimbulketiya Maha Vidyalaya and R/Sumana
Saman Maha Vidyalaya in the Ratnapura District.
He worked WP/KT Alutgama Maha Vidyalaya and transferred to KT/Veheragala
Vidyalaya where he served as the Principal until his retirement.
