Deyata Kirula concludes

A large number of development projects worth several million rupees were carried out in the Moneragala District due to the Deyata Kirula exhibition, Telecommunication and Information Technology Minister and Deyata Kirula Steering Committee Chairman Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said.

Over 2.5 million visitors had visited the Deyata Kirula exhibition by yesterday noon, the final day of the exhibition.

The exhibition began on February 4 and was held for the fifth consecutive year providing knowledge and entertainment.

It created a strong image of the country’s history. In line with the 63rd Independence Day celebrations the Deyata Kirula exhibition commenced on February 4 under President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s patronage.

The closing ceremony of the exhibition was held yesterday evening with the participation of Prime Minister D M Jayaratne, Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, Uva Province Chief Minister Sashendra Rajapaksa and several Ministers.

Due to the exhibition, infrastructure development initiatives including the road network in the district have almost been upgraded and many rural electrification projects have been implemented. Electricity, health and education sectors have also developed, Minister Siyambalapitiya said.

Measures have also been taken to upgrade sport facilities in the Moneragala District. Twelve new complete volleyball playgrounds are being constructed in the district at a cost of Rs 70 million, Sports Ministry Secretary and Deyata Kirula Exhibition Organisation Committee Secretary Udaya Ranjith Senaviratna said. Two new playgrounds and a Volleyball ground were commissioned yesterday by Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage.

The construction of the grounds is in progress and nearing completion, he added. Sports equipment were also distributed among the 11 Secretariat Divisions in the Moneragala District by the Minister.

During the closing ceremony, the winning teams in Volleyball, Netball and Kabaddi received prizes and certificates from the Prime Minister.
