'Work hard to face any food crisis'

We must work hard to face any future food crisis which is possible due to the changing weather patterns, said National Freedom Front (NFF) Parliamentarian Piyasiri Wijenayake.

He was addressing the media at the party Head Office at Battaramulla yesterday. Large extents of farming lands were destroyed world wide due to bad weather conditions. It is clear that we have to face lots of problems in the near future, More than 2.5 million acres of paddy lands in the Ampara, Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa areas were destroyed due to floods.

Fruits, vegetables and other agricultural crops were also destroyed. More than 50,000 dairy cattle were also destroyed.

As a result of that milk production will drop. No one is personally responsible for this problem. As Sri Lankans all of us have the responsibility to find solutions to the food crisis without blaming each other, he said.

He also said that the NFF requests the government to take immediate steps to encourage people by providing seeds, fertilizer and other relevant materials to cultivate more crops in home gardens to successfully face this challenge.
