Flawless beauty
Bollywood make up guru on the secrets of onscreen
magic:
Ruwini Jayawardana
Film and make up go hand in hand. The flawless
complexion of heroines and the macho good looks of the hero are
creations of art. Much like designers and painters, make up artists work
for timeless hours ensuring that they get every detail right. Even one
strand of misplaced hair or an extra blob of mascara matters for the
camera picks up these minute details. Take it from expert Bollywood make
up artist Cory Walia

“I am not a magician, plastic surgeon or a converter. I take the raw
material and use my eyes, sense of proportion and talent to bring out
the best features which already exists in the natural beauty. You need
to use your senses to analyze what suits a person rather than take it
out of a formula. It is a creative and evolving process,” noted the make
up guru who had worked with top artistes like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan,
Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Shilpa Shetty, Vidya Balan, Raveena Tandon and
many others.

According to Cory Bollywood make up had changed drastically and
dramatically over the years.
The cosmetic industry is thriving and external factors like
globalization, an influx of producers, sophisticated directors,
technical crew, cast and advanced technology had contributed to the
change.
“Healthy skin is a very important factor. Many actors are too lazy to
give time to revitalize their skin.
“They over-work and do not drink enough water, take vitamins, eat a
balanced diet or exercise. Many rely on genetics but it is a combination
of all these aspects which is the path to a glowing skin,” Cory said
revealing that male actors like Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Shahid Kapur
and John Abraham are more aware of maintaining good skin than their
female counterparts.
Cory’s fascination with make up rooted from watching his grandmother
and mother applying make up.
“They were both particular about their grooming. I learnt the art
then while playing around with their cosmetics,” said Cory who had been
managing his father’s wholesale liquor business before making his break
in tinsel town.

Speaking on moments in which make up artists have worked wonders Cory
says, “if an actor’s features are in the correct proportion, the make up
artist can use his or her skills to make the individual look like a
million bucks! Nargis Dutt used to have very masculine features but look
what great camera work, lighting, styling and sheer acting talent made
her look like on screen.”
He says that Raveena Tandon is one artiste who went for a more
dazzling phrase by taking his tips to heart.

“I did her eyebrows for the very first time in her life. I told her
not to worry about her nose. I told her how to combine dark eyes and
light lips and light eyes and dark lips. The other person who took my
advice seriously a long time ago was Salman Khan. I told him how he
needed to hold himself taller. There are a few things a man should do to
look sophisticated, like use a deodorant and mouthwash.”
How best can one translate reel life make-up to real life?
“Find an identifiable person that you actually resemble. Do not just
go chasing your dreams and desires; be realistic. Then emulate and
observe. Look at magazines, check out interviews and find out where your
personal individual styling stands. Read tips and learn more about
them,” he said.
He adds that there s no mantra for applying foundation. It should
come with the practiced eye.
The base should be close to the actor’s, model’s or bride’s skin
tone.
He does not believe in using fairness products or bleaching to
enhance one’s beauty.
“I see glamour and potentiality in every face. My job is to highlight
the best features. Most Asians think being dark or tanned is bad. That’s
their biggest complex. Learn to love your skin tone, only then can you
highlight it,” he stressed. Cory was in Sri Lanka on an invitation by
SLAHAB to conduct a workshop on bridal make up.
