Navy rescues monks and civilians

Naval rescue teams deployed by the Eastern Naval Command rescued (17) persons including six Buddhist monks who were marooned in floods at Somawathiya area Tuesday.

The rescued team had sailed on a boat from Manampitiya towards Somawathiya area to distribute dry rations for flood victims.

About 15 km off Manampitiya, they had distressed in the floods due to an engine failure.

The Navy was informed about the incident and rescue teams were dispatched to the location. The marooned group was rescued by the sailors.
