A commemorative postage stamp and first day cover to honour the late Dr P R Anthonis was issued by the Philatelic Bureau of the Postal Department to mark his 100th birth anniversary on January 21, 2011. A group of Sri Lankans resident in Italy and some members of the Italian Institute for Asia and Mediterranean (ISIAMED) met the Italian Ambassador in Sri Lanka to discuss on adverse travel requirements in that country which retards Italians travelling to Sri Lanka. Two held with ganja

A suspect in possession of 16.5 kilogrammes of ganja was apprehended by officers manning the Kithulkote Police checkpoint at Thanamalwila on Tuesday. The suspect was due to be produced before the Wellawaya Magistrate by the Thanamalwila Police. Another suspect in possession of 2.6 kg of ganja was apprehended by the Katunayake Police at Walpola the same day. He was to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate yesterday.


Tractor-mo-bike collision

A motorcyclist injured in a tractor-motorcycle collision at Tittawelyaya by road on the Ampara main road succumbed to his injuries on admission to the Akkaraipattu hospital.

The deceased was identified as Marie Mohideen Niyaz (23) of 5th Mile Post, Ampara Road, Akkaraipattu.

The tractor driver is in Police custody. Akkaraipattu Police are investigating.


Earthslip buries woman

An earthslip in Abawaka, Badulla on the Nuwara Eliya Road damaged a house burying an inmate named Mary Fernando, 50 on Tuesday.

Badulla Police are investigating the incident.


Traffic offences bring in Rs 1.9 m

The Meegahawatta police have collected about Rs 1.9 million, as fines from traffic cases filed at the Gampaha Magistrate's Courts in 2010, OIC Meegahawatta police, IP Srineeka Sanjeewa Jayakody said. These fines were for offences including driving under the influence of liquor, lack of driving licences, insurance certificates, vehicle licences, transporting of illegal timber, animals, river sand and also violation of road rules.


 

Drunk drivers fined

Pugoda Magistrate and Additional District Judge, Aravinda Perera, fined six suspects Rs 5,000 each totalling to Rs 30,000 when found guilty of driving vehicles under the influence of liquor. MV


Fined for felling Jak trees

Pugoda Magistrate and Additional District Judge, Aravinda Perera, fined K. Somawardhana, of Urapola and A Somachandra of Kirindiwela, a sum of Rs 5,000 each, totaling to Rs 10,000 when they pleaded guilty of cutting two jak trees without permits. Kirindiwela police prosecuted.


Independence celebrations

The 63rd Independence celebrations in the Kalutara district will be held under the patronage of Kalutara District Secretary H T Kamal Padmasiri.

The chief invitee will be Transport Minister Kumara Welgama who will hoist the national flag at 8.30 am on February 4.

About 1,500 schoolchildren from various schools in the district will participate. At this ceremony, deeds of land will be distributed among five poor families and wheelchairs for four handicapped persons.

Colombo University Graduate Studies Faculty will be calling for applications from those interested in following its Post Graduate Diploma and Masters programs in Manufacturing Management, a press release issued by the University said.

Food night market

The Sri Lanka Food Processors Association will conduct a Night Food Market on February 15 at the Vihara Maha Devi Park (Green Path - Maldekma) Colombo from 4 pm to 12 Mid Night.

It will enable manufacturers of all reputed brands to offer their products and services at discounted prices to the consumers. Vegetables and coconuts will be sold at concessionary prices.

The Association will arrange events of this nature at various locations in the near future.

Roshan Kumara

The External Affairs Ministry seeks public assistance to identify the relatives of a Sri Lankan who died in Italy.

The Italian authorities have informed the Sri Lankan Embassy in Rome regarding a death of a Sri Lankan in October 2010 in Italy. According to Italian authorities, the deceased born November 6, 1985 has been registered under four names; Kumar Roshan, Kumar Roshan Anthony, Rajapathirana Antony Kumar Roshan and Warnakulasuriya Roshan Kumara.

Weapons seized

Mulleriyawa Police seized a T-56 weapon and a magazine with five bullets from a partially built house at Mulleriyawa, Karangoda Road following interrogation of a suspect arrested in Angoda Tuesday.

The suspect was handed over to the Mirihana Special Investigation Unit for further investigations.


Suspect nabbed

Kananke police following a tip off nabbed a suspect who had two locally made firearms in his possession Monday.

The suspect was a resident of Penetiyana, Kananke, police said.

Kananke police are investigating.


New drama

Udayasiri Wickramaratna's 'Suddkek Oba Amathai' will be staged to celebrate Independence at Borella Namel Malani Punchi theatre on February 4. Main characters are played by Jayalath Manoratna, Naleen Pradeep Udawela and Madanee Malwattage. This event is organized by the Sadjana Sahurda Sansadaya.


Blood donation

Ruhiru Parami Puja, a blood donation campaign organized by the Eedandukitha Parami Kala Kawaya will be held on Feb 04 throughout the day at the Eedandukitha Sri Wiwekarama Vihara premises Morawaka Matara for the fifth consecutive year.
