MEP snubs PR system

The Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) vehemently oppose the present Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system introduced by JR Jayewardene as it doesn't produce a genuine representation of people's will, said Party Leader Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardena addressing the 20th national convention.

It has contributed towards degrading of the franchise-the sovereignty of the people. The Minister called for an immediate change of the present electoral system, and to introduce pragmatic and accountable system suited for the country.

The 20th National Convention of the MEP was held at the New Town Hall Colombo.

The Minister emphasized that it is important to move towards a participatory development era as seen in China to achieve and materialize targets set forth by the Mahinda Chinthana.

He pointed out the importance of creating new income generation opportunities in the village and in getting the new generation of the educated youth involved in national development.

The Minister said the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna pioneered in rallying the Pancha Maha Balawegaya of Sangha-Vedha-Guru-Govi-Kamkaru and always took correct decisions with the people in safeguarding the Motherland.
