MEP snubs PR system
The Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) vehemently oppose the present
Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system introduced by JR
Jayewardene as it doesn't produce a genuine representation of people's
will, said Party Leader Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh
Gunawardena addressing the 20th national convention.
It has contributed towards degrading of the franchise-the sovereignty
of the people. The Minister called for an immediate change of the
present electoral system, and to introduce pragmatic and accountable
system suited for the country.
The 20th National Convention of the MEP was held at the New Town Hall
Colombo.
The Minister emphasized that it is important to move towards a
participatory development era as seen in China to achieve and
materialize targets set forth by the Mahinda Chinthana.
He pointed out the importance of creating new income generation
opportunities in the village and in getting the new generation of the
educated youth involved in national development.
The Minister said the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna pioneered in rallying
the Pancha Maha Balawegaya of Sangha-Vedha-Guru-Govi-Kamkaru and always
took correct decisions with the people in safeguarding the Motherland.

Minister DEW Gunasekara, Minister Prof Tissa Vitharana, Prof Nalin De
Silva, Prof AVDS de Indraratne, Anagarika Dharmasekara, diplomatic
