Grade 1 admissions:

Taboo on fees

All Government schools and non-fee levying private schools in the Western Province are strictly prohibited from charging any money or accepting anything in kind for the admission of children to grade one classes except school development society membership fees according to Education Secretary's Circular No 2010/21 dated May 31, 2010, emphasized Western Province Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga in a press release yesterday. However the Provincial Education Ministry has been receiving a stream of complaints from parents against principals' flouting this circular.

Parents subjected to such undue influence should report such instances in writing to JMC Jayanthi Wijetunge, Secretary, Ministry of Education, Local Government, Lands, Human Resources, Employment, Power and Energy, ‘Shravasti’, 32, Sri Marcus Fernando Mawatha, Colombo 7.
