The National Equipment and Machinery Organization (NEMO) was
amalgamated with the State Engineering Corporation (SEC) with Cabinet
approval on 20.01.2011.
A ceremony in this regard was held on Monday under the patronage of
Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities
Minister Wimal Weerawansa at the Elphinstone theatre, Maradana.
The NEMO which was established on May 21, 1992 under the National
Housing Development Authority Act No 17 of 1978 has rendered a great
service to national development as an active State institution.
The NEMO was initiated in 1992 with a staff of 693 members, 210 heavy
vehicles and 400 other types of equipment.
The staff later increased to 1,082. NEMO had been a profit-making
body and then became profitless. The NHDA has been paying the salaries
of NEMO employees for the last six years. NEMO once played a greater
role in national development process.
The NEMO's amalgamation with the SEC that extends a helping hand to
the national development of the country by constructing massive projects
at present is a positive sign for the future of both the country and the
NEMCO institution.
It is a great victory achieved by Sri Lankans to unify the NEMO with
the SEC in the face of future massive development programs.
The State Engineering Corporation is a body that was established on
January 1, 1962 under the Industrial Corporation Act. The first chairman
of the Corporation was Dr A N S Kulasinha.
The Corporation which has rendered 49 years unique service has four
pre-cast concrete supplying yards.
The institution uses modern computer technology and maintains
improved software networks in building construction sector and to
accelerate management of those projects.
