More landslide warnings

The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) issued a warning that landslides may occur in various parts of the central hill country due to the recurrent rainy weather.

NBRO Senior geologist R.M.S. Bandara warned people in Kandy, Matale, Nuwara Eliya and Badulla of the risk of possible landslides due to the present rainy situation. The possibility of recurring landslides is high if rains continued further.

Badulusirigama and Kahataruppa in the Badulla district face a danger of possible landslides. In addition, he pointed out that other areas are also vulnerable to landslides.

According to him, Udamuduna in Walapane, Mahawewa and Kumbulgamuwa in the Nuwara Eliya district and Kudarattota and Mahaussagolla in Matale district are landslide prone areas.

Rockfalls would develop at Bodhi Katuwa, Yatawawala in Nagolla and Wilangahawatta in Pallepola. These are also high risk areas.

Apart from these areas there are some unstable areas where possible landslides can occurr. Gannoruwa and Katugastota road is again in danger of experiencing landslides. The Mahanuwara Kurunegala main road is also landslide prone, he said. SB
