First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa

Officer’s Office on Monday. A group of 125 children received
parcels of biscuits at this ceremony organised by the
Provincial Health Department on the guidance of the Health

Dry rations collected by Lake House in
aid of persons displaced due to landslides and floods, were
distributed among the displaced persons in the Kandy

Earth tremor in school

Students of Swarnamali Balika Vidyalaya, Kany
panicked and ran out of the classrooms when the school was affected
by an earth tremor around 1 pm yesterday. According to the eye
witnesses, a window pane of the Principal's office has been
shattered and buildings had shaken due to the tremor. Officials of
the Building and Mining Bureau have begun investigations on the
incident.
Felicitation message from President Mahinda
Rajapaksa
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has issued a message of
felicitation on the 78th birthday of the Most Ven Kotugoda
Dhammawasa Anunayake Thera, whose birthday falls tomorrow.
The President in his message says that the Anunayake
Thera has won world recognition as a leading member of the Buddhist
clergy and is also a pride to the entire nation as his fame is not
limited to this country, but to many countries in the world.
Soldier fined

An Army private taken into police custody for
entering a house in Ayojanagama, Kundasale with the intention of
robbery was fined Rs 3,750 and discharged after a severe warning
when he was produced before Kandy Additional Magistrate Ravindra
Premaratne recently.
Hakeem thanks Indonesia
Sri Lanka is receiving a great impetus from Indonesia towards the
development of the tourist industry, Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem said.
He was speaking at a meeting held at the Kotte Parliamentary Complex
under the patronage of the Indonesian Ambassador when he was elected Sri
Lanka - Indonesia Parliamentary Friendship Association President
recently.
Addressing the meeting, Hakeem said Economic, Social and Cultural
relations between Sri Lanka and Indonesia dated back to several
centuries.
"As two Asian countries, Sri Lanka and Indonesia should always try to
remain as strong nations," he said.
He also thanked Senior Minister A H M Fowzie for the services he has
rendered as the outgoing President of the Sri Lanka-Indonesia
Parliamentary Friendship Association.
The following office bearers were also elected. President Minister
Rauff Hakeem, Vice Presidents Ministers Tissa Karaliyadde and A H M
Fowzie and Parliamentarian A H M Azwer, Secretary, Victor Anthony MP,
Assistant Secretary - M S M Aslam, MP and Treasurer Shehan Semasinghe

Treasure hunters nabbed

Five persons hunting for treasure at the Nilagama Nilagiri Raja Maha
Vihara premises in Kandapalla-Korale in Matale district were arrested by
Galewela police.
Police raided the place on a tip-off by the villagers and arrested
the suspects along with the equipment and offerings. According to the
police investigations, all suspects were from the same area. Galewela
police are investigations.
Woman nabbed with heroin

A woman was taken into custody with heroin in her possession in
Wekunugoda, Galle.
She was arrested by the Police following a tip-off. She had been
engaged in trafficking heroin in the area for a considerable period, the
Galle Police said. The suspect was produced before the Galle Magistrate.
Galle police are investigating.
Couple punished for swindling job seekers
Gampaha group corr
A person who pleaded guilty of cheating 5 persons amounting to a
total sum of Rs one million by promising foreign employment in Italy was
imposed a term of 6 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs
3,50,000 by Gampaha Chief Magistrate Mohamed Mackie.
If unable to pay the fine he will be imposed a further 30 months
rigorous imprisonment. His wife who was accused of assisting him was
imposed a term of 6 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000. The
guilty couple is Suraj Fonseka and Niluka Cooray. Gampaha police Special
Investigations Unit led evidence.
IFRC President here today
International Federation of the Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies
(IFRC) President Tadateru Konoe will arrive in Sri Lanka today to
support flood operations in the island.
Konoe is expected to meet President Mahinda Rajapaksa, External
Affairs Minister Prof G L Peiris and Economic Development Minister Basil
Rajapaksa. He will also travel to the North, the East and the South to
assess the aftermath of floods and also to witness the work of the Sri
Lanka Red Cross Society and the IFRC in these parts of Sri Lanka.
'O' positive kidney needed

Mawanella is suffering from end stage kidney failure. Consultant

A free acting and drama workshop organized by the National Youth

The veterinary surgeon's office and the clinic at Walasgala in
Dikwella will be vested in the public Provincial Agriculture and
Livestock Development Minister Wijeya S Weerasinghe on Friday (28) at 3
pm.
Pinkama
A Pirith Pinkama to invoke blessings on the President, the
Government, country and the people will be held at the Bellanwila Raja
Maha Viharaya on January 26 and 27.
It will include an all night Pirith ceremony on January 26 followed
by a Sanghika dana on January 27 forenoon.
The arrangements were finalized at a committee meeting held under the
patronage of Ven Prof Bellanwila Wimalaratana Nayake Thera and attended
by Labour and Labour Relations Minister Gamini Lokuge and Sumith
Wijesinghe Secretary to the Leader of the House.
The event is co-ordinated by Assistant Secretary (Labour Relations)
to the President Hemasiri Jayalath and Presidential Assistant Director
Saranadasa Weerasinghe.
Deadly fall

A two-year-old boy died when a jak fruit plucked by his father fell
on his head on Saturday afternoon.
The boy had been standing near the tree with his mother when the
father plucked the fruit with a picker.
The deceased was identified as S T Herath of Ranawana, Katugastota.
Inquirer into sudden deaths M Piyatillaka who held the inquest
returned a verdict of accidental death.
Indian national nabbed with cocaine
Bhakthi DHARMAPRIYA MENDIS
Customs officials yesterday (25), took into custody an Indian
national at the Katunayake Airport for possession of 10 kilograms of
cocaine valued at Rs 150 million.
A customs officer said that the Indian national who had brought the
consignment of cocaine from India to Sri Lanka, had planned to take it
to Bangkok later.
Airport Customs officials are holding further investigations.
A’pura MC cases postponed
Anuradhapura Central Special
The Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate Darshika Wimalasiri and Additional
Magistrate Chandima Edirimanna decided to postpone all the cases due to
be called yesterday (25) till March as case files in the Magistrate’s
Court achieves had been burnt due to the fire on January 24.
These cases have been put off till March 1, 9 and 31.
The fire which had erupted on March 24 had disrupted the normal
Magistrate’s Court functions.
