National Green Reporting System to be introduced
Disna MUDALIGE
The Environment Ministry in collaboration with Sri Lanka Investment
Board and Sri Lanka National Chamber of Commerce (SLNCC), has taken
steps to introduce a National Green Reporting System for the industrial
sector.
Social and environmental information and data in the industrial or
commerce sector, will also be reported under the green reporting system
in addition to the financial variables which are usually reported. For
example, even natural resources will be added as fixed capital to
accounts under green accountancy which is a part of this system.
"Green accountancy and green reporting could prove the environmental
friendly status in goods and services as well as in the production
process. Modern day consumers were inclined to buy organic products or
products that contain minimal carbon amounts, since priority was given
to control global warming and climatic changes.
"A prominent place could be obtained both in the international and
local markets by enhancing green qualities of products", an Environment
Ministry official said.
As an initial step to this program, a two day training program for
selected representatives from 26 industries affiliated to SLNCC and four
leading super markets were commenced at the Ramada Hotel yesterday.
Environment Ministry plans to establish a unit comprising trained
employees to carry forward the green reporting system in the industrial
sector after the completion of training.
