Nine stupas in nine districts

IGP. Mahinda Balasuriya

Nine stupas will be constructed as war memorials in nine districts to commemorate the victory over 30 years of LTTE terrorism ended by the armed forces and the Police, Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasuriya said.

The first stupa named Sandahiru Seya is being built near the Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura with public funds, he told a ceremony held at the Rankoth Viharaya, Panadura Wednesday.

The ceremony was held to raise-funds for the construction of the Sandahiru Seya in Anuradhapura. "It is the duty of all to help in the construction of the nine Stupas in the nine districts," the IGP said.

Contributing funds for the construction of the nine Stupas was a historical event of ending the 30 years war. The Sri Lanka Police and the Sri Lanka Navy have offered to supply building material and the Sri Lanka Army had consented to provide labour. The foundation has already been laid, he said.

The fund raising campaign was inaugurated at the Rankoth Viharaya, Panadura with the sale of tickets valued from Rs 1,000.
