Inheriting the tradition

Vishradha Sadana Ranathunga

Sadana’s mother Daya Hemantha and grandmother Wasantha Sandanayake

Being a digit of a family chain which did a yeoman service to nourish Sri Lankan arts Visharadha Sadana Ranathunga is going to hold a concert to revive the contribution.

“My father is Shanthi Abeysekara who was a film director and my grandmother Kalasuri Wasantha Sandanayake who is reputed as the Uthuwankande Kokilawiya. So music is injected into my blood naturally. It is my duty to add more value to what my family did on behalf of Sri Lankan music,” Sadana said.

This year she will launch a CD album which includes the songs sung by her family along with hers.

“The songs and music of our family should be protected otherwise they will be purloined by the unfavorable elements in the sector for monetary gains. So this preservation should be done immediately. I don’t want other people to claim the values of our family,” she further said. Sadana, in addition to her activities mainly done for the preservation of family music, teaches music to primary students of Royal College, Colombo.

“The main thing in my mind is the concert which is coming up this year. That will be held in a grand scale. The organizing activities are being done these days. The concert will be a fresh and a new experience to Sri Lankans who love the Sinhala song,” she concluded.
