Providing shelter charitable duty
"The Janasevana Housing and Settlement Development Program will be
launched this year to fulfil the needs of housing of the entire nation.
This year has been named as Janasevana Year. The government has targeted
to provide housing facilities for a minimum of 50,000 families within
this year. This program aims to provide housing facilities for all
communities of the society and will be implemented at village, district
and provincial levels," said. Construction, Engineering Services,
Housing and Common Amenities, Minister Wimal Weerawansa at a ceremony
held at Janakala Centre where promotions were given to the Ministry
staff.
The Minister said that the event was important because the committed
employees of the Ministry were appreciated for their performance after
three decades. This year, we are going to provide housing facilities for
one million families who are in need of shelter. The government has
declared this program as Janasevana Wasara. The major task of this has
been assigned to the NHDA, and this ceremony will help motivate staff to
discharge their duties more efficiently.
"We never restricted the housing development program implemented by
the present government to a certain ethnic group or a certain area. This
is why first cluster housing project was started in Kilinochchi district
where the majority of displaced persons live.
"According to the preaching of the Buddha, giving shelter to people
is a nobel act, therefore the staff of the NHDA is performing not merely
a duty but also a noble service."
