The Trinity College cricket team created a new record for the school
when it registered its eighth win in a row, when they beat Mahanama
College by five wickets with five overs to spare in their schools under
19 cricket tournament match played at the Asgiriya Stadium Kandy
yesterday.
The previous record by a Trinity College cricket team was in 1922 led
by Percy Maralande had scored seven outright wins in a row. This record
stood for 89 years till it was lowered yesterday. Maralande who won his
cricket lion in 1920 led the team with much success for three years from
1920 to 1922.
Trinity's win yesterday was fashioned by their spinners Janishka
Premasinghe, Akila Jayasundera and Aamil Anas.
But the Trinitians were almost stalled by Mahanama's skipper Hashan
Perera who stroked a brilliant 104 off 204 balls with 8 fours and 2
sixes.
He scored 104 of the 130 runs when he was at the wicket. But his
fighting knock was in vain in the end as the Lions batted in fading
light to register their 8th win in a row.
