World Food program to help the displaced
Economic Development Ministry has taken measures to divide a
consignment of food worth Rs 55 million received from the World Food
Program among 525,300 displaced persons in the Eastern Province and
Polonnaruwa District said a communique issued by the Government
Information Department.
318,500 persons in the Batticaloa District 15,350 in the Ampara
District, 40,000 in the Trincomalee District and 13,000 in the
Polonnaruwa District have been displaced.
Accordingly, 405 MT of food items for the Batticaloa District, 190 MT
for the Ampara District, 50 Mt for the Trincomalee District and 16 Mt
for the Polonnaruwa District are being distributed at present.
In addition 25 MT of food worth US$ one million received from India
on Friday (14) were handed over to Economic Development Minister Basil
Rajapaksa by Indian High Commissioner Asok K Kanthan. Employees in all
public and voluntary organizations are working round the clock to serve
the affected people the communique further said.
