Heavy rain destroys paddy cultivation

Sudden floods in the recent past has caused severe destruction to the paddy fields which were prepared for the Maha cultivation in Maligaikadu area in the Ampara District.

A vast acreage of paddy fields were totally damaged because of the water flowing over the paddy fields due to the flood gates of the anicuts, which were put across the river to provide water to the fields not being opened during the heavy rain last week, according to the farmers.

As a result paddy in areas like Thoiyan Vattai, Veerakkadu agriculture divisions have been washed away.
