Floods death toll at 40

The Disaster Management Center (DMC) yesterday said the death toll owing to floods and heavy rains has risen to 40 while 51 persons were reported missing.

Over 50,000 persons belonging to 13,340 families are still living in welfare camps and 137 camps are still in operation, a DMC Spokesman told the Daily News. The highest number of camps have been set up in Eravurpattu, Manmunai West Divisional Secretariats Divisions in the Batticaloa District.

More than 33,000 persons belonging to 8,508 families displaced by floods in the Batticaloa District are still in camps. Over 3,000 houses were fully damaged and 6,441 were partially damaged.

According to the DMC, 51 persons were injured following torrential rains resulting in low lying areas in 16 districts being submerged. Over 39,069 people belonging to 11,141 families were affected in the Vavuniya district. One person died. More than 450,000 persons belonging to 120,699 families were affected in the Ampara District. Eleven deaths were reported while 15 were injured and three were missing. Around 9,973 persons belonging to 3,107 families were displaced in the Trincomalee District in 27 welfare camps.
