Fluorescent lamps in place of incandescent street lamps

Incandescent street lamps will be replaced with fluorescent lamps soon. Street lamps with solar powered lamps will be a huge investment, Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said.

The Minister addressing a media briefing at the Power and Energy Ministry recently said if street lamps were switched off and switched on on time, electricity will be saved up to 30 percent. The Minister said that the current technology is obsolete.

It needs to be replaced with new more effective technology which will help save electricity, Ranawaka said.

Local Government institutions in charge of street lamps are not doing the job properly. Maintenance should be carried out correctly to develop the country, he said.

"It will be properly maintained in the future," he added.

The Minister said it has been proved that it is possible to save electricity up to 30 percent by a pilot project initiated in Peliyagoda.
