Jaffna Round - UP

A token fast was observed at the Jaffna bus stand under the leadership of Jaffna District SLFP Organizer Velmurugu Thangaraja to condemn the actions of the Tamils in London who staged a demonstration against the President who went to London to address the Oxford Union.

The fast lasted through the day and hundreds of SLFP supporters joined it shouting slogans against the action of London Tamils. The numerous posters held by them hailed the President as the Saviour of Sri Lankans and the custodian of human rights.

Eventually beggars get wages

Six beggars who were begging at the outer courtyard of Nallur Kandasamy temple have found employment under the direction of the Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Douglas Devananda. These six beggars had been in the habit of begging outside the Nallur Kandasamy kovil.

The Minister on his rounds had noticed these men leading a lazy life. He instructed the Jaffna Municipal council authorities to find them work. These men are now employed as casual labourers on a daily paid basis. They are employed as sweepers and cleaners and were given their wages by Jaffna Mayor Yogeswary Patkunarajah in the presence of other workers.

Japanese help for northern coast

The Japanese Organization JAICA has helped us to start new maritime industries and rehabilitated the jetties of Kakaithivu and Navanthura. These jetties have been rehabilitated and modernized by them. The Sri Lanka government is grateful to them" said Douglas Devananda Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development after declaring open the Kakaithivu jetty. The Government Agent Northern Province Mrs Ilmeda Sukumar presided.The Minister said that the JAICA organization has come forward to start coastal vegetation at Velanai. They will encourage the breeding of Sea Cucumber at Gurunagar and Mandaithivu. They have rehabilitated the maritime training and sea food industrial school. They will give raining to our fishermen in modern fishing methods".

After the opening of Kakaithivu jetty the minister opened the new jetty at Navanthurai.

Video studio burgled

A video studio at First mile post Point Pedro was burgled recently and Rs 800,000 worth of video cameras and computers have been removed.

The Point Pedro police are investigating.

Bitter sweet lesson for drunk swimmer

A tourist who was swimming in the Casurina sea at Karainagar was timely saved by the coastal police from drowning. A middle aged man who was drunk dipped into the sea and started swimming. He was in distress after a few minutes. At this point a policeman on duty jumped into the sea and rescued him from drowning.

Jaffna Police Superintendent requested those who go to Casurina beach and Chaddy in Velanai for bathing and recreation to desist from taking liquor.

Mullaitivu soil rubber friendly

Rubber trees are to be planted in the North at Mullaithivu and Kilinochchi districts. A trial cultivation of rubber in five acres at Mullaithivu has shown good results.

The soil and the climate of Mullaithvu and Kilinochchi are said to be very conducive to rubber cultivation.

When rubber cultivation is undertaken in two hundred acres at Mullaithivu and Kilinochchi it will give employment to many youth.
