Cholera epidemic in Haiti :
Unicef calls for support
Haiti: United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Director
General Anthony Lake asked to avoid that political tensions interfere in
the fight against the cholera epidemic.
During a visit to the Cholera Treatment Centre (CTC) in the Haitian
capital, Lake noted the need to address the health crisis that has
caused over 2,400 deaths in two months.
Lake admitted that the current situation is difficult, given the
instability unleashed in Haiti due to disagreement on the part of the
population and some candidates with the preliminary results of the
presidential election.
After the elections held on November 28, attention has shifted
slightly to requests of annulling the election results, according to
which the opposition candidate Mirlande Manigat got 31.37 percent of the
vote.
The representative of the ruling Unity Party, Jude Celestin, achieved
22.48 percent of the vote, followed by Michel Martelly, Respect Party,
with 21.84 percent.
Despite the slight difference, the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP)
decided to allow Manigat and Celestin to contest the second round of
elections on January 16.
The decision sparked protests from supporters of Martelly, who
requested the presence of the three candidates in the upcoming
elections. Port au Prince, Prensa Latina
