First Lady at health camp
Carlton Suva Udana

First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa has a word with an elderly citizen who attended a health camp held at the Abhinawaramaya, Kataragama under the Carlton Suva Udana program recently. A distribution of school equipment among several schools in Kataragama was also held concurrently with this program. A group of specialist doctors from Western Province conducted the health camp organised with the assistance of the Health Ministry and students of the Colombo Sirimavo Bandaranaike Balika Vidyalaya. Kamala Ranatunge, MP, Sri Lanka Ayurveda Corporation Chairman Somaweera Chandrasiri and Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya Vice Principal Himali Pathirana were also present. Heavy fines

Gampaha Additional Magistrate M Indika Attanayake imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 and suspended the driving licence of an accused who pleaded guilty to the offence for two months for riding a motorcycle under the influence of liquor.

Accused was W S S Perera of Warahanthuduwa, Mahara.

Gampaha Additional Magistrate M Indika attanayake also imposed fines amounting to Rs 45,000 on nine accused who pleaded guilty to the charge of riding motorcycles under the influence of liquor.

The accused are between the ages of 19-24. They are from Gampaha, Imbulgoda, Henegama, Udathuthiripitiya and Weliweriya areas. Weliweriya Police prosecuted.


Motorcyclist dies in collision

Two motorcycles collided at Kandana town on Wednesday night and one motorcyclist died on the spot.

The other motorcyclist was admitted to the Colombo North General Hospital Ragama with serious injuries.

The deceased was identified as Shantha Perera (27) of Udamwita, Ja Ela. The injured motorcyclist who was in hospital is Anil Perera of Kopiyawatte, Ragama.

Traffic branch of the Kandana Police is investigating.


Knocked down by train

A 75 year old woman died on the spot when she was knocked down by a Colombo bound train near the Horape Railway station last Tuesday. The dead woman was identified as W Mary Rita Soysa of Horape, Ragama.

The Inquirer into Sudden deaths for Ragama M Priyankara Lal recorded a verdict of accidental death.

The deceased woman's daughter M M Jasintha Fernando (38) gave evidence. Dr Keerthi Gunatilleke JMO Ragama held the autopsy.


Heroin dealers nabbed

Biyagama Police nabbed a heroin dealer, a private bus driver with 680 milligrams of heroin and another suspect with 170 milligrams of heroin at Karabugas Junction on Thursday morning. The suspects were from the Biyagama Police area.

The suspects were produced before Gampaha Magistrate Courts.


Water supply scheme

A water supply scheme built at Karikatkulam Pooneryn to Cater to the resettled people was commissioned by Social Service Minister Felix Perera recently.

Commander 66th Brigade Brig Chandana Kodituwakku was also present on the occasion.


Buddhist discussion

The next Buddhist Public Panel discussion of the Colombo YMBA will be held on Sunday, December 19 at 10 a.m. at its Borella building on ‘Life is Dukkha’. The Panelists are Olcott Gunasekera and Mrs Mallika Karunaratne, former Secretary, Ministry of National Heritage, with Rajah Kuruppu as moderator.


STF raid ganja cultivation

Officers of the STF of the Suriyawewa and Hambantota camps in a joint operation conducted with the Police Anti Narcotics Bureau sleuths, raided a ganja cultivation in extent of one and a half acres in the Savundan Aru (Ela), area in the Yala sanctuary on December 13.

They seized 18,000 ganja plants and arrested three suspects in this connection.

Following the operation, they also seized a mortar used for poaching and arrested another suspect, a resident in Sellakataragama.


Three nabbed with stolen fertilizer

Three persons who were transporting a consignment of robbed subsidized fertilizer for illegal purposes, were arrested at Malayaw, Sammanthurai by STF officers attached to the Karaitivu camp . They also seized 159 bags of fertilizer along with 73 empty bags and a sewing machine from their possession. The suspects, residents of Samanturai were produced before the Kalmunai Magistrate and remanded till December 29.


Councillor to lose seat

Batticaloa Municipal Councillor Prakasam Sahayamany who disappeared since August 23, will lose his membership in the Council due to his absence for meetings over three months.

Batticaloa Municipal sources said a new Councillor in lieu of Sahayamany will be appointed.


Chain snatched

Two men allegedly entered a business place at Thalpawila, Matara pretending to purchase cigarettes threatened the owner of the business place and snatched a gold chain valued at Rs 150,000 and escaped, Gandara Police said. Meanwhile, Kamburupitiya Police nabbed a suspect who allegedly robbed a mobile phone valued at Rs 16,000 from a business place owner at Karaputugala. The suspect had entered the business place pretending to buy cigarettes, Police said.


kasippu transporter fined

A resident of Mivitigammana was fined Rs 50,000 by Pugoda Magistrate and Additional District Judge Aravinda Perera for transporting 240 drams (30 bottles) of kasippu on a motorcycle.

Kirindiwela police prosecuted.


X’mas carols at WTC

Christmas Carols will be held at World Trade Centre, Colombo on December 21, 2010 from 3.30 pm to 6.30 pm. The police band will also performed at the event.


Centenarians’ welfare

A committee meeting of the Sri Lanka Association for the welfare of centenarians (SLAWC) headed by Prof Colvin Goonaratna will be held today at 10 am at the Council Room of the Sri Lanka Medical Association at No. 6 Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7.

Among matters to be discussed is the progress of ‘Tissue Culture’ of the Vanda 100 centenarian Orchid Plant, the first of its kind developed by the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens for the SLAWC.


Fox postpones Lanka visit

British Defence Secretary Dr Liam Fox has postponed his scheduled visit to Sri Lanka, the British Defence Secretary’s Office said in a statement yesterday. However, a spokesman of his office told the BBC that the postponement was due to an extension to his scheduled official visit to the Gulf and it would go ahead next year.


Beggars rounded up in Vavuniya

A batch of 85 beggars loitering in the streets of Vavuniya, were rounded up to be sent to rehabilitation camps in a joint operation conducted by the Vavuniya UC, Police and the District Secretariat yesterday.


Website prohibited

Kandy Chief Magistrate Lalith Ekanayake on Thursday ordered the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission to temporarily prohibit the operation of the website www.penpals.pl for allegedly publishing details of a female undergraduate of the Peradeniya University in a manner defaming her character.

This followed an application made to Court by the Central Province Police Special Investigation Unit.


Pristine value to be preserved

Newly appointed Kandy District Secretary Gamini Senaviratne said some old buildings in the Kandy city will be kept in their old appearance due to the declaration of Kandy a world heritage city.

He said these buildings are in a dilapidated condition and will be renovated preserving their archaic quality.

The District Secretary said the traffic congestion in the Kandy city and the suburbs will be minimized with the assistance of police and other authorities.


ASP Dharmapriya remembered

A series of religious activities including Dhamma Desana and alms-giving will be held from December 18 to 20 to commemorate the death anniversary of ASP Dharmapriya Abeykoon who died in the LTTE attack on President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga at Town Hall grounds, Colombo in 1999.

ASP Dharmapriya is an old boy of St Sylvester’s College, Kandy and was a renowned boxer.


Fined for possessing heroin

A youth who possessed 40 miligrams of heroin was fined Rs 10,000 by Gampaha Additional Magistrate and District Judge Indika Aththanayaka. Kadawata police led evidence.


Naval troops attached to SLNS Gajaba in the North-Central Command arrested two persons in possession of two rare sea hogs at the Vankalaipadu fishing Marshalling Point in Thalaimannar on December 15. The suspects were handed over to Fisheries Inspector (Pesalai) for legal action.
