LSSP works for everyone

Social welfare programs such as free education and free health became a reality due to the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP), party secretary and senior Cabinet Minister Professor Tissa Vitarana said.

The LSSP has strived throughout history to build a society where everyone enjoys equal benefits, Prof Vitarana said.

The Minister addressing a press conference at the Dr N M Perera Centre in Colombo Tuesday said the Party struggled to build a just society. He said the party being the oldest political party in the country fought against the imperialists who exploited the country's resources.

The LSSP's 75th anniversary will be held at the National Youth Centre Maharagama Friday. The party works for the people he said.

The party's main target at that time was to make the country free of the British crown. The country was freed under the Republican Constitution presented by Dr Colvin R de Silva.

"As a party we are bound to create a Sri Lankan nation and a Sri Lankan culture. Under new liberal policies the USA exploits the country.

However under the Mahinda Chintana the country has the opportunity to defeat these backward ideas."

Southern Provincial Council Member and Lanka Sama Samaja Party Assistant Secretary Ven Baddegama Samitha Thera said all are welcome to build a equal society in the country.

The LSSP is the party which mainly influenced the country's economy and culture. "We fought against the caste difference and imperialism."

Kegalle District Parliamentarian and LSSP National Organizer Y J Pathmasiri said some people accused that the Party has played a role to destroy Buddhism.

Nevertheless Dr N M Perera offered tax benefits to import equipment to build the gold fence around the Sri Maha Bodhi. He declared Poya, holiday.

LSSP Deputy Secretary Anil de Soysa and Assistant Secretary D M D Aberathna also spoke.
