Solution for garbage
Disna MUDALIGE
Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said that promoting
solid waste management in the rural context would help solve the garbage
problem before it arises.
He pointed out that taking early remedies is easier than trying to
reverse the situation at the severely affected stage.
The Minister also observed that the usage of polythene and plastics
has grown unlike in the past and therefore awareness of the people
regarding this menace is important.
The Environment Ministry has provided financial and technical support
to the Galgamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha and Kurunegala Municipal Council as
the first step of introducing the Solid Waste Management to the North
Western Province.
Central Environmental Authority (CEA) Chairman Charitha Herath said
that the program to regularize solid waste management would be
introduced to the Provinces through the respective local authorities.
Waste collecting bins were handed over to Galgamuwa PS Chairman H M
Gunarathne and Kurunegala MC Mayor Nimal Chandrasiri de Silva on this
occasion.
