Panadura Provincial High Court Judge, Malanee Gunaratne said that
deterrent punishment was necessary for the accused who had committed
brutal murders, but in this case, the owner of a Job Agency found guilty
of culpable homicide not amounting to murder of a domestic aide, who had
come to him expecting employment.
The Court sentenced the accused Ranaweera Pradeep Kumara, a job
agent, residing at Suwarapola in Piliyandala to ten year rigorous
imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 in default of six months
imprisonment.
The Court also ordered the accused to pay a sum of Rs 200,000 as
compensation to the mother of the deceased, Pradeepa Neranjanee, killed
by strangulation.
In this case, the accused Ranaweer Pradeep Kumara was indicted by the
Attorney General with the murder of Pradeepa Neranjanee, a domestic aide
on July 19,2007 at Suwarapola.
It was revealed that domestic aide Pradeepa Neranjanee who hailed
from Galle, had come in search of employment, had met the accused who
was running a job agency in Suwarapola, Piliyandala.
She was accompanied by her mother. They resided at the Job agency.
The accused who was married and having a child had fallen in love with
the girl.
On the child's first birth anniversary, the wife who was living away
from home, had phoned her husband that she wanted to visit them.
The accused who panicked at the possibility of his wife finding out
his involvement had assaulted the domestic aide and strangled her to
death.
He had later dumped the body in a gunny bag and buried it in a deep
pit at the back yard of his home at Suwarapola, Piliyandala.
On a tip off, police had found the body and exhumed it. A magisterial
inquiry was held while Colombo South AJMO held the autopsy and returned
a verdict of death due to strangulation.
The accused was indicted by the Attorney General.
