Eco-friendly livestock farming needed

Farming should be promoted in an environmental-friendly manner, Central Environmental Authority Chairman Charitha Herath said.

Central Environmental Authority ChairmanCharitha Herath addressing the workshop

A workshop on eco-friendly livestock farming for healthy living was held on November 30 at the Central Environmental Authority Auditorium.

The Annual Production and Health Department and Health Ministry are involved in promoting animal husbandry. Promoting animal farms may lead to environmental and social issues such as bad odour, ground and surface water pollution.

Co-ordination between institutions is a must to achieve eco-friendly livestock farming. Main aim of the workshop was to improve the co-ordination among the Health Ministry, the Animal Production and Health Ministry and the CEA. Importance of the framework to achieve eco-friendly livestock farming was emphasized. Preparation of a guide book for eco-friendly livestock farming was initiated at the meeting. Establishment and operating livestock farms should be to the standards of the guide book.
