EU vows continued assistance
European Union EU Asia and Central Asia Director Dirk Meganck who is
in the country on a visit said the EU and the UN have not only supported
Sri Lanka during times of difficulty and war but will continue to assist
the country in its post conflict development as the joint partnership
between the two organizations has proved to be successful.

He said the EU and the UN have been working together in the country
for many years supporting diverse sectors including infrastructure,
education, shelter, livelihoods, water and sanitation, health and food
security in collaboration with the Government.
He was speaking at the launching of a documentary yesterday featuring
EU and UN joint cooperation projects carried out in the country.
The combination of UN experience and partnership with local
authorities and communities with key EU inputs on project design,
monitoring and funding,is producing results with a lasting impact said
UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator Neil Buhne.
External Affairs Deputy Minister Neomal Perera who said the UN and
the EU are doing an active role in development of the country.
He said Sri Lanka ranks 16th among the top 20 countries which are
demonstrating equality between men and women at the Global Gender Gap
Index released in October 2010 which is a reflection of support provided
by the UN and the EU.
The EU funds diverse sectors including infrastructure, shelter,
education, livelihood, water and sanitation, environment, health and
food security.
A significant amount of funding has also been allocated for emergency
relief, development projects, reconstruction and rehabilitation
activities, he added.
He said 78 local NGOs and INGOs and 11 UN agencies are working in
partnership with the government on rehabilitation and reconstruction
programs in the Northern Province. |
