'Storage complex incident sabotage'

The incident at Walpita Paddy Storage complex in Divulapitiya where the germination of paddy had taken place from gunny bags they were loaded in, in keeping with a recently introduced Indian paddy storage method, is an act of sabotage.

Co-operatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando yesterday said the canvass of the tent in which the paddy sacks were placed for protection was cut with a sharp instrument by someone creating an opening to let rainwater fall directly on to the paddy sacks.

The Minister said he has called for a police investigation on the incident.

A team of officials from Internal Trade Ministry and Paddy Marketing Board visited the Paddy Storage Complex in question today on the orders of Minister Fernando.

He said there is no problem with the Indian Paddy Storage Method but a man-made attempt to sabotage the storage system.
