Trade Unions condemn LTTE demo

The Central Council of Ceylon Trade Unions yesterday condemned the LTTE demonstration in London which precipitated the cancellation of the President's lecture to the Oxford Union as a challenge to the whole Sri Lankan nation and called upon the people to make a united stand to defeat the machination of the LTTE diaspora to bring war crimes allegations against Sri Lanka which successfully defeated the most ruthless terrorist outfit in the world.

The Council in a press release issued under the signature of its General Secretary Somaweera Chandrasiri said the Government led by President Rajapaksa is engaged in a massive development drive spending over Rs two billion already for the development of the North-East and resettlement of the displaced and it was the duty of all Sri Lankans including those living abroad to assist that endeavour.

As much as the Government has requested the Tamil Diaspora to assist in the North-East development if it is genuinely interested in the welfare of the Tamil community the UNP too should shelve vituperative and obstructionist politics and join hands with the Government to develop the country. The release also challenged the UNP to prove its opposition to terrorism by bringing in a Parliamentary motion condemning the LTTE protest in London.
