The Police station was renovated under A class category and is
equipped with all latest facilities a police station need. The Ceylon
Tobacco Corporation sponsored the reconstructing of the police station.
It was reconstructed in six months at an estimated cost of Rs 130
million. Prime Minister Jayaratne said the main duty of the police
should be to restore peace through good governance and reconciliation.
“If the police maintained law and order with a proper mechanism no
strife would resurge. Most burning issues in the society could be
tackled with police support,” he added.
The Premier said many programs have been earmarked to protect the
benefits derived from the Mahinda Chintana policy initiative in the
North and East. He noted that political differences should be confined
only to the political areas and not for religious or cultural spheres.
Political divisions will hamper the country’s march to progress, he
said.
IGP Mahinda Balasuriya and Ceylon Tobacco Corporation Chairman
Jayampathi Bandaranaike also participated.
