Glowing tributes paid to Tissera
by P Rajaratnam in Nuwara Eliya
At the adjourned 121st Annual General Meeting of the N'Eliya Golf
Club held at the clubs auditorium, its President Umesh de Silva paid
glowing tributes to the late Clive Tissera, who had been a member of
this British club over a period of uninterrupted 60 years holding many
honorary posts, in addition as a trustee of the club for many years.
He said Tissera had been a colonial time planter serving in the hill
country tea plantations during his lifetime since he left his school
career at St Thomas' College at Guruthalawa and Mount Lavinia.
He said his death was an irreparable loss to the entire golfing
world, since he was well-known figure as a British time planter, a keen
sportsman and above all he was a kind and a lovable human being.
He was a tower of strength to the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club and
instrumental in bringing the club into an international repute at all
times.
He has fought many a legal battle both in the Industrial Courts on
plantation matters, as well as in the Clubs disputes in the recent
times.
President Umesh de Silva dwelt on many matters on the development of
club and added that the club has to face many legal confrontations
brought by certain quarters, particularly relating to the recent
elections of the club, where after a protracted trial before the Court,
the judgement was delivered in favour of the club and the judgement of
which was circularised and distributed among the members present.
The meeting concluded with a glorious club nite, with a array of
fabulous dishes put out by chief Chef Wimal Wimalagunaratne of the
Hiltons.
