More than Rs 300,000 will be on offer at the Mervyn Silva Challenge
Trophy open cycle race to be held on December 4 at Kelaniya.
The Gampaha District Cycling Association and Sri Jaya Sports Club,
Wanawasala are jointly organizing the event to mark President Mahinda
Rajapaksa's assumption of office for the second term.
With the blessings of Sri Lanka Cycling Federation, the 144 km race
will be considered for national cycling rankings. A team can comprise
six cyclists and two supporting motor bikes. The registration and
issuing of numbers will take place on December 3 at the Cycling
Federation office.
The cyclists will gather at Sri Jaya Sports Club December 4 at 8.00
am and will be taken in a motor parade to the starting point near the
Peliyagoda Police station.
The race will proceed through Fourth Mile Post Kelaniya, Bollegala,
Biyagama, Delgoda, Weliweriya, Belummahara junction, Kandy Road,
Kadawatha, Kiribathgoda and back to Fourth Mile Post. There will be
three laps and in the final lap the race will finish at Thorana
Junction.
The winner will receive the Mervyn Silva Challenge Trophy and a cash
prizes will be on offer for the cyclists who finish upto 15th place.
