Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari who was on a visit to Sri Lanka called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa and signed four agreements which are important to both countries. The four agreements are on facilitating visa free travelling between two countries for holders of diplomatic and official passports, broadening agricultural co-operation between these two countries, mutual administrative co-operation in custom matters and co-operation in the fields of art and creative studies. The agreement for facilitating visa free travelling between the two countries for holders of diplomatic and official passports was signed by the External Affairs Minister Professor G L Peiris and Pakistan Foreign Minister Macdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi. Here the two Ministers exchanging the documents in the presence of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari.


Kandy Buddhist Association AGM

The 65th Annual General Meeting of the Kandy Buddhist Association (KBA) presided by its President Dr Cicil Godamunne was held at the KBA Hall, Kandy recently. The KBA, a premier organization in Kandy with a recorded History of over six decades was established on January 19, 1945 by Dutch National Bhikku Dhammapala.

The Association’s objective is to impart the Buddha’s teachings to the public and promote and foster social activities. The Association during the last 65 years has promoted and fostered these traditions and in keeping with its motto Kammang Bhavethi Anagathang has activated its members to establish The Saranasevana Children’s home at Mawilmada in 1976, a Library of Buddhist Literature started in 1949, annual Oratorical and Essay competition for schoolchildren started in 1956 and Dhamma and Meditation class started in 1980.

The Kandy Humanitarian Organization started the Elders’ Home The Saranasewana Elders’ home at Mawilmada providing accommodation to 35 inmates in 1997.

The KBA in association with Helpage Sri Lanka also maintains the Help-a-gran scheme.


CEB leaflet distribution

Leaflets to make consumers aware of electricity costs and save energy will be started under the guidance of Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka by the Ceylon Electricity Board.

The campaign Viduli Bila Bala Bindimu will be launched islandwide.


Help this child

P J E P Malinda Malshan, 7, of Kankiniyahena, Gammedda, Midigama, Ahangama is suffering from a hearing disability in both ears.

Doctors treating him have recommended the implant of a hearing aid to overcome this deficiency. The process is estimated to cost Rs 110,000. The child’s mother L P Kusumalatha says her family is unable to raise this sum due to their present financial plight.

She requests philanthropists and the public to assist her child’s cause by sending financial contributions to help expedite this process.

Contributions should be remitted to account number 1-0066-02-5783-4 at the NSB Weligama branch.


Gamage, acting CP senior DIG

Central Province senior DIG Gamini Navaratne left for Japan on Monday to follow a special training course. NCP Senior DIG Jayantha Gamage has been appointed to act for him until his return on December 12.


Bodhi Puja

A Bodhi Puja will be held on December 5 at 7 pm at the Shri Sunandaramaya, Kalubowila to mark Ven Maussagolle Lankananda Thera’s 46 year in Buddha Sasana as a Buddhist monk.

The Annual Prize Giving of the Hataraliyadda Primary School will be held at the T B Ilangaratne National School auditorium on December 5 at 10 am. Senior Minister of International Monetary Co-operation Dr Sarath Amunugama will be the chief guest.


Bodhi Puja and Pirith

A Bodhi Puja and Pirith Chanting organised by the Sri Lanka - Thailand Society will be held on December 3 commencing 5.30 pm at the Gangaramaya, Colombo 2 under the patronage of Thailand Ambassador Thinakorn Kanasuta and Madam Dana Kanasuta to invoke blessings on King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej to mark his 83rd birthday.

Microfinance conference in Nepal

In a bid to identify the problems of microfinance in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries and seek solution to them, a two-day long SAARC level microfinance conference is being organized in Nepali capital Kathmandu from Tuesday.

More than 70 microfinance workers, experts, policy makers and stakeholders from India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka will participate in the conference organized with the joint initiative of the Institute of Microfinance, Bangladesh and Rural Microfinance Development Centre, Nepal.


Over 60 houses damaged

Torrential rains in the hill country has damaged 68 houses in Doluwa, Gampola. The worst damage has been caused in the Udapalatha Divisional Secretariat Division where 58 houses have been damaged with 20 of them damaged beyond occupation.

Six families have been evacuated from their homes due to an earthslip on the Gampola Unambuwa Road.

Dr Knishka Karunaratne will deliver a public Buddhist Talk in english on "Importance and the Practice of the Anapana Sati" at the meeting of the Servants of Buddha Society on Saturday, December 4 at 4.30 p.m. at the Maithree Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.


Nadasarani 2010

The Nadasarani Concert organized by Mahanama Navodya Vidyalaya, Panadura will be held on December 2 and 3, 2010 at Panadura Townhall. This type of concert will be staged after 8 years. Some winners of The All Island Competitions will also perform at this occasion.


Seminar

The Institute of Chemistry has organized a Seminar on "Standardization for International Trade" on Friday, December 3, 2010 from 8.30 a.m - 4.00 p.m. at Adamantanne House, 341/22, Kotte Road, Welikada, Rajagiriya. Two key-note addresses will be delivered by Dr L N Senaweera, Director General, Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) and Dr A M Mubarak, Director, Industrial Technology Institute (ITI). The seminar covers all aspects of quality system such as ISO 9000, ISO 14000 and ISO 22000 and the laboratory quality management such as ISO 17025, ISO 15189 and ISO 17043.

The annual Carol Service of the Colombo YMCA will be held at the Colombo YMCA Gymnasium, No. 39, Bristol Street, Colombo on Saturday, December 4 at 5.30 p.m.


Opening

The "Institute of International Studies", Kalawewa will be ceremonially opened by Dr H M Nasir, Head of the Mathematics Department, Peradeniya University on December 4 at 4.00 pm.

Special workshops and seminars will be conducted for the benefit of school students, school leavers and elders relating to language, religion, sociology, culture, technology and health, Dr Wajid added.


Jayaska Scrabbler of the year

Jayaska Baranage clinched scrabbler of the year title yesterday in a marathon two day, eighteen game scrabble tournament held in Colombo. He was the clear winner with 14 wins followed by Malinda Gunawardena and Shaila Amalean.

Fifteen year old Yasiru Fernando was placed fourth-a creditable performance ahead of the World Youth Scrabble Championships in the Philippines where he intends to take part after a week.


Bad weather continues with more damage

The Meteorological Department predicted that the prevailing weather condition specially in the North, North Central, Eastern and Uva provinces will continue next week. According to the Meterological Department, Colombo received highest rainfall of 60.8 mm in the last 24 hours ending 8.30 am yesterday.

Gampaha district has received a rainfall of 47.5 mm and Hanwella has received a rainfall of 43.1 mm for the past 24 hours.

North, North Central, Eastern and Uva Provinces will experience showers and thunder showers today. Thunder showers will develop inland in the afternoon and will spread to the Western and the North Western coastal areas later, Meteorological Department said.

Several areas of Kurunegala, Kandy, Puttalam, Moneragala and Kegalle have been flooded as a result of heavy rains. The total number of people affected has been recorded as 45,487 belonging to 11,332 families in these areas, the Disaster Management Centre report said. Two deaths were reported and around five were injured due to floods caused by heavy rains, the report also said.

Around 75 houses were fully damaged and 424 houses were partially damaged due to floods, the Disaster Management Centre said.
