LLRC Interim Communication:
IAC holds first session
The Inter-Agency Committee (IAC) established to facilitate the
implementation of the Interim Communication of the Lessons Learnt and
Reconciliation Commission (LLRC), held its initial session under the
Chairmanship of Attorney General Mohan Pieris on November 24.
The Committee gave careful consideration to the interim
recommendations of the LLRC and decided to request the relevant State
agencies to take immediate measures to implement the interim
recommendations as best as they could and to report to the IAC as to
what help (if any), would be necessary to give full meaning to the
recommendations.
The IAC noted that several measures have already been taken in
furtherance of the implementation process. The IAC was also of the view
that it works in close consultation with the LLRC and seek the
Commission’s directions if deemed necessary.
The Committee also decided to ensure that those in the North and East
who are homeless, should receive due priority in the allotment of houses
under the projects assisted by the Indian Government and the World Bank.
The LLRC presented interim recommendations covering several issues to
President Mahinda Rajapaksa in September. These recommendations were
based on a careful consideration of the representations received by the
Commission from many quarters.
The Cabinet accordingly decided at the end of October, that an
Inter-Agency Committee be constituted for facilitating through practical
measures, the implementation of the interim recommendations.
