Uruguay Govt battles TU strikes
Uruguay: The Uruguayan Government faces a week of conflicts because
of the trade union strikes, not more than eight months after the second
administration of the Frente Amplio leftwing coalition assumed the
Executive in this South American country. Analysts pointed out that the
expectations of the trade unions were founded in a deepening made by
current Uruguayan President José Mujica of the changes during the
mandate of Tabaré Vazquez (2005-2010). Uruguayan Public Health
Federation and of the National Convention of Workers leader Jorge
Bermudez questioned the current administration for not going beyond the
precedent reforms in recent statements to newspaper Ultimas Noticias.
“If the change is not pushed on, the conservative sectors will go
against. That happens when the social and political bases pushing for
the change get weakened.
I am not saying that the FA has arrived to this conclusion, but it is
in an area of danger”, he said.
