Counterfeit currency case :

Suspect remanded

Trincomalee Magistrate yesterday remanded a businessman whose garment bag that two children had stolen, contained counterfeit currency notes. The suspect was produced before the Trincomalee Magistrate by Kinniya Police who charged him with unlawful possession of forged currency under section 468 of the Penal Code.

The children involved in the case were released on cash bail of Rs.10,000 each and surety.

They were 15 and 10 years old, the police said.

A businessman at Kinniya 2, main road on Sunday brought the 15 year old boy to the Kinniya Police Station who had two fake Rs 1,000 notes and five fake Rs 100 notes.

Upon being questioned by the police, the child is said to have told the police how he and another 10 year old boy found them from the suspect’s garment’s bag which they secretly took away from the suspect.

The ten year old was also brought into the police station with two fake Rs 100 notes and one Rs 1,000 note.

The owner of the garment is a resident in Welimada, Amabalanduwa.

Kinniya police are investigating, said Kinniya Police OIC Chief Inspector Karunaratna.
