In Kurunegala, Puttalam, Moneragala:
Over 11,000 people affected by floods
Over 11,000 people from 2,392 families were affected in the
Kurunegala, Puttalam and Moneragala districts due to floods caused by
heavy rains last evening.
Several districts in the country experienced heavy rains due to the
low pressure that developed in the Bay of Bengal.
Over 2,000 people belonging to 584 families in Kurunegala, 8963
people from 1802 families in Puttalam and six families in the Moneragala
district were affected due to floods.
The respective Divisional Secretariats are coordinating with the
Disaster Management Ministry to provide assistance to the flood victims.
According to Major D.Navarathne of the Disaster Management Center,
more than 100 acres of lands in the Kurunegala district were inundated
and the Sri Lanka Navy deployed boats in several GN divisions including
Hettipola GN Division to ferry the flood affected. The Divisional
Secretary have been informed about relief distribution and the affected
people to be evacuated to safer locations.
Affected families in the Puttalam district have been given
accommodation in Community Centers.
The Disaster Management Centre in a report said that over 35 houses
were damaged and 137 partially damaged in Kurunegala following
torrential rains. Over 3,645 people belonging to 719 IDP families were
also affected due to floods in the Puttalam area. There were no deaths
reported.
The Meteorological Department warned the public of possible showers
or thunder showers today. An atmospheric disturbance developed close to
Sri Lanka will result in heavy rains.
